Member publications organise coverage of 2024 General Election
The general election may have come during the summer break, but many of our members have still been producing exciting, innovative and informative content.
As polling day approaches, here’s some of the election coverage highlights from student journalists across the UK for you to catch up on!
The Prime Minister’s surprise announcement of the election remains one of the most memorable moments of the campaign, and Wessex Scene writer Byron Lewis was in Westminster to witness it. This is a wittily written account of the day with a clear voice and point of view, which gives a good sense of what it was like to be amongst the crowds when the election was called.
This article provides a comprehensive and factual overview of the election campaign. Published on 20th June, it covers all the main events up to that point, including the election announcement, the first head-to-head debate, and the early controversies of the campaign. It also gives an overview of the parties’ main policy pledges.
This Comment piece from Palatinate is a clever idea, featuring three of the publication's writers who each provide their own responses to articles from the national press. Covering the decision to hold a July election, Nigel Farage, and leaders’ debates, this article brings students’ perspectives into a broader national discussion.
On 20th June, the leaders of the Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, and SNP were questioned by a live Question Time audience at the University of York. Students from York Vision were in the BBC’s spin room to cover it. This comment piece from one of the students there on the night is an insightful account of being in a spin room, being a student journalist at a national event, and the experience of a television programme like Question Time coming to a university campus.
The BBC’s head-to-head debate between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer on 26th June took place at Nottingham Trent University, and Platform Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief Carla Dowling and News Editor Sophie Fagone were there to cover it. Providing live updates on their website throughout the evening, there was also some great content on the publication's Instagram, which included a tour of the spin room and an interview with Nottingham Trent's Vice Chancellor.
Have you ever heard of the election artist? This article by Concrete’s Co-Editor-in-Chief Fiona Hill introduces this role, which has been appointed for each election since 2001, and delves into its history. Culture writing is crucial to many student publications, and it's wonderful to see it combined with politics, offering a different perspective on UK elections.
Finally, Cherwell have conducted a survey of Oxford students on the election, covering topics including voting intentions, political trust and students’ attitudes towards Labour. Why not have a read and see how their views compare to your university?
If you’ve done some great coverage we’ve missed, or you report on election night, we will be posting a round up on our social media, so drop us an email at communications@spajournalism.com to let us know!
